The NC500: Scotland’s Ultimate Road Trip

The NC500 (North Coast 500) is the quintessential Scottish road trip and a bucket-list journey for any motorbike rider. While Lewis’s 45-year-old bike might not be up for the challenge, he has experienced this iconic route in an old VW T25 bus. Often referred to as Scotland’s answer to Route 66, the NC500 takes you through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Scottish Highlands. This multi-day adventure, typically spanning 4-5 days, includes must-see stops like Achmelvich Beach, the Hermit’s Castle, Smoo Cave, and Sandwood Bay. Don’t miss the chance to detour to the Applecross Peninsula and the stunning West Coast stretch between Lochinver and Durness. With its breathtaking views and thrilling single-track roads, the NC500 offers an unparalleled riding experience.

The Glasgow to Oban Loop: A Local Favourite

For those seeking a scenic day trip with a touch of adventure, Lewis recommends the Glasgow to Oban Loop. This route, starting in Glasgow, leads you through Glencoe‘s majestic landscapes before reaching the charming town of Oban. Lewis adds a unique twist by taking a short ferry ride from Seil Island to Luing to visit a friend in Cullipool. On the return trip, Lewis chooses a different path, passing through Inveraray, Loch Fyne, and the iconic Rest and Be Thankful before wrapping up with a drive along the scenic Loch Lomond. This loop is a long but rewarding ride that highlights some of the most picturesque motorbike routes in Scotland.

Loch Lomond: A Nearby Gem

When time is short but the desire for adventure is strong, Lewis often opts for a local favourite: a ride around Loch Lomond. Starting in Glasgow, this route heads towards Balloch, continues to Drymen, and then onto Aberfoyle to tackle the famous Duke’s Pass. For camping enthusiasts, the Three Lochs Forest Drive offers excellent spots to pitch a tent. The ride continues through Callander for a quick chippy dinner before heading home via Crianlarich and Loch Lomond. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, an alternative route takes you south from Callander, past the Lake of Menteith and through Balfron Station to the Glengoyne Distillery. This route offers beautiful landscapes right on your doorstep, proving that you don’t need to venture far for a great motorbike adventure.
