Scenic Detour: Discovering the B8074 – A Hidden Highland Gem
26/05/2025
Explore the breathtaking B8074 – a secluded route of waterfalls, forests, and Highland history.
At Little’s, we pride ourselves on not just getting you from A to B, but doing so with elegance, comfort, and – whenever possible – a touch of unforgettable scenery. Last summer, a series of unexpected road closures led our chauffeurs to explore alternative routes. One such occasion, Kenneth, our Director and Head of Special Operations, recommended a true hidden gem: the scenic drive along the B8074 in the Scottish Highlands.

The Route Less Travelled
Winding its way from Bridge of Orchy to Dalmally, the B8074 is a classic Highland road – around 12 miles of single-track serenity through the heart of Glen Orchy. This stretch offers not just an alternative to the main roads, but an unforgettable experience in its own right, especially for those with a love of Scotland’s natural beauty and storied past.
A Journey Through History and Nature
Your journey begins in Bridge of Orchy, a village steeped in history and nestled on the famous West Highland Line, one of the world’s most scenic railway journeys, running from Glasgow Queen Street to Fort William and Mallaig. The original bridge in the village, built in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden, even earned a mention in the 1995 film Rob Roy – allegedly, this is where he was to be executed, accused of cattle theft.
As you travel south along the B8074, the road carves its way through remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest. Along the way, you’ll pass crystal-clear waterfalls, and countless spots perfect for a scenic stop or a photo opportunity. It’s a road that invites you to slow down and savour every bend and view.
Did You Know?
The New Zealand town Glenorchy was named after the Glen Orchy.
As you near the end of the road, the valley opens into the broader landscape of Strath Orchy – “strath” being the Gaelic word for a wide mountain valley.
The nearby village of Dalmally, where the B8074 meets the A85, is home to Glenorchy Parish Church and is the birthplace of the late Labour leader John Smith, who is buried on the sacred Isle of Iona.
More Than Just a Detour
While originally a diversion due to traffic incidents, this scenic drive along the B8074 in the Scottish Highlands quickly became a talking point between our chauffeurs and passengers alike. It’s 12 miles of unspoiled Highland beauty that offers something the main roads never could: a true sense of discovery.
If you’re planning a journey through the Western Highlands, ask us about incorporating the B8074 into your itinerary. Whether you’re en route to Oban, Fort William, or simply exploring the area, it’s a road that turns a transfer into a memory.
