At almost 70 years old, the Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s largest and most revered celebration of entertainment and the arts will light up the streets of Scotland’s capital city once again between 05 – 29 August. The numbers speak for themselves; In 2015 there were 50,459 performances of 3,314 shows in 313 venues, making it the largest ever arts festival in the world. The abundance of both free shows and street performance make The Fringe accessible to everyone, locals and visitors alike both have no choice but to become immersed in the vibrancy of the occasion – and the result is a truly fabulous melting pot of culture, ethnicity and integration.
To give a brief background, the Fringe story dates back to 1947, when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to perform at the (then newly formed) Edinburgh International Festival, an initiative created to celebrate and enrich European cultural life in the wake of the Second World War. Not being part of the official programme of the International Festival didn’t stop these performers – they just went ahead and staged their shows on the ‘Fringe of the Festival’ anyway – coining the phrase and the name ‘(Edinburgh) Festival Fringe’.
Hotel rooms in Edinburgh are already full, with overspill reaching Glasgow and beyond – almost 2 million tickets were sold for the shows in 2015, a figure equating to almost 40% of the population of Scotland!
